Titanic Hotel, Belfast

Across from the Titanic Experience and those Belfast icons, the Harland & Wolff cranes, the Titanic Hotel gets close to gimmicky in a few places but swerves at the last minute. The ship itself was built there just there, in the Harland & Wolff shipyards, so it’s hard to accuse the hotel of gimmickry, to be fair. And wisely, it doesn’t try to compete with the Titanic Museum’s eye-catching architecture. It’s a straightforward red brick, old industrial box-type building. The g Hotel & Spa, Galway

The g (yes, lower case – more silly branding decisions for us to admire) is a mildly ostentatious Galway City boutique hotel, which gives a sandwich of first impressions. The building is modern, sure, but nothing gives away too much from the outside. The little circular roof bits are cute, and even the colourful nighttime lighting is more cool than flamboyant. The Merchant Hotel, Belfast

If you’ve grown sick of the more contemporary Belfast boutique hotel, this classic beauty in the Cathedral Quarter is just what the doctor ordered. The Merchant is basically just historic B&B meets luxury hotel, boutique in size and intimacy rather than style. Originally the Ulster Bank headquarters, the mid-1800s building is a sight to behold. An Italianate facade features rust-coloured stone carved to perfection, the domed entrance surrounded by allegorical columns. The interiors feel like an ode to the architecture. Furnishings are vaguely period-specific, if not legitimately from the 19th… > Read Our Full Review

The Mont Hotel, Dublin

The Mont, by Merrion Square, offers comfort and sophistication, at very reasonable rates for a central Dublin boutique hotel. The building itself isn’t much to write home about, though we do like the cast-iron detailing surrounding the doors. Inside has large windows and sleek, design hotel, decor: muted neutrals, peppered with colourful geometrics. Though decor may err on the generic side, it’s a very comfortable hotel with top quality amenities, good service and reasonable pricing.   What are the rooms like? 96 rooms: Modern, well-equipped rooms with plenty of natural… > Read Our Full Review
