For a small neighbourhood, Quebec City’s Vieux-Port has an impressive selection of boutique hotels.
Auberge Saint-Antoine though may just lead the crowded market with a strong sense of local identity, good design, and some top-notch amenities.
We love the way the red brick nestles in with the surrounding buildings, like it just couldn’t exist anywhere else.
Indeed, the renovation that took the buildings that make up the property from “old wharf” to “chic hotel” unearthed a veritable treasure trove of historical artifacts.
Many of these are on display throughout the hotel, including at least one in each room.
They add an immediate sense of place, and a little intrigue too: Basse-Ville and its Old-Port are the oldest parts of the city.
There were other renovations too, designed to meet the exacting standards of its business daddy, Relais & Châteaux.
Despite that Auberge Saint-Antoine still feels half luxury hotel, half something akin to a local, family run museum. Which we kinda love.
What are the rooms like?
- Rooms: 95 individually styled rooms, each featuring a unique historical artifact.
- Design: Contemporary decor with personal touches, avoiding fleeting design trends.
- Options: From Queen Singles to Panoramic Suites, with city, courtyard, or river views.
- Highlights: Heated bathroom floors, quality linens, robes, and full amenities in all rooms.

Rooms are decorated in a contemporary style but one that leans away from design trends and so feels rather timeless.
You will get the odd printed headboard and fuzzy throw pillow, but they feel more like personality quirks than decorative themes.
Supplemented with the aforementioned historical artifacts, you get a distinctive feel from each room, but one that’s always rooted in this lovely old city.
Comfort-level rooms at Auberge Saint-Antoine range from Queen Singles to Double Doubles, running around 330 square feet.
They’re the simplest option, looking out towards the city or the courtyard.
Luxe rooms hit more like 375 square feet, the base levels King Singles with views of the courtyard.
Some feature sofa bed perfect for families or groups.
Upgrades in this category include views of the river and options with terraces.
If you prefer more space, move up to a Suite. Junior Suites start at 500+ square feet, which is more than enough for a couple, and super-comfortable for a group.
Other suites have more space and include king and queen beds.
The pièce de résistance is the Panoramic Suite, which we’d happily recommend to anyone with a generous budget and a deep love of sunlight, views, and open air.
Whatever you choose, standards are high at Auberge Saint-Antoine, with cosy robes and gorgeous linens throughout.
All rooms feature TVs, coffee machines, mini fridges and heated bathroom floors.

One of the best aspects of a competitive boutique hotel scene are the additional amenities.

Dining runs the gamut from casual-chic fare at Bar Artefact to exceptional fine dining at Coteau.
This farm-to-table experience features multiple tasting menus designed in deep collaboration with a local farm.
It’s worth a visit, whether you decide to stay at the hotel or not.
Then, of course, there’s the classic Afternoon Tea, a bit of a must-have in any fancy boutique hotel within the ol’ United Kingdom’s, now grown up, children.
The onsite gym is a 24-hour situation with a separate yoga room that offers a weekly complementary group class.
It’s closely connected to the onsite spa, a bright, relaxing space with a focus on skin care and a gorgeous Finnish sauna.
We have Cinéma Saint-Antoine, available for private screenings, which has auditorium-style seating and a large, full cinema sized, screen.
And finally, there are concierge services available at the hotel.
How is the neighbourhood? Anything interesting nearby?
- Setting: Located in Quebec City’s Old Port, rich in historic landmarks and atmosphere.
- Nearby sights: Museum of Civilization, Royal Battery, and Montmorency Park are steps away.
- Local life: Close to lively dining, shopping, and cultural streets.
- Day trips: Easy access to Île d’Orléans and Montmorency Falls for nature lovers.
With little bits of Vieux-Port history scattered throughout, Auberge Saint-Antoine feels a lot more in touch with Quebec City than most of its luxury hotels.
Museum-like in itself, the property is also walking distance from a handful of other opportunities to experience local history.
Montmorency Park National Historic Site is right behind the hotel, the Royal Battery is spitting distance, and the Museum of Civilization is next door.
The Old Port Agora and the Naval Museum are also walking distance.
If the hotel interior is enough history for you, you’ll also be close to most of the lively dining, shopping, and sightseeing areas.
For longer stays, we recommend making a trip out to Île d’Orléans.
Combine this with a stop at Montmorency Falls and you get to enjoy some of the area’s nature as well as its history.
And what about the reviews? What did other guests think?

“Location, exceptional room furnishings and decor. Attentive staff and service. The breakfast facility, eating area was excellent. Food was excellent, service very friendly….”
“Comfortable rooms. Excellent, plentiful breakfast with lots of choices each day. Very attentive staff, especially bell captain, concierge and wait staff….”
Some things guests didn’t like:
”Room toilets were unusual ( all functions were operated by controller). Temperature control was difficult at best with radiators and cold air vents….”
”Since it’s at the bottom of the old city’s hill, there was a lot of up and down each day….”
