TL;DR
- Historic house – a characterful Bruges historic building with connections to Surrealist painter Rachel Baes.
- Intimate atmosphere – just 9 rooms and a friendly, personal approach give Hotel Malleberg a homely feel.
- Vegan breakfast – the entirely plant-based food is a genuine draw, even for curious non-vegans.
- Central location – major Bruges landmarks, canals, museums, beer gardens, and parks are all within an easy walk.
- Guest favourite – visitors praise the beautiful renovation, generous rooms, exceptional breakfast, and welcoming atmosphere.
Hotel Malleberg is an eco-conscious, (Green Key Certification) Bruges boutique hotel run by a friendly local couple.
The building is a historic Flemish townhouse, once home to the Surrealist painter Rachel Baes.
The interiors are now of course modernised, the decor is pretty contemporary but the atmosphere and the aesthetic still feel suitably olde.
The food is entirely plant-based at Hotel Malleberg, which may be, well, we’d hope not, but, off-putting to some.
Regardless, their vegan breakfasts are so good we’d rate it as a very good place for the vegan-curious to try.
What are the rooms like?
- 9 rooms – a small collection of four room types keeps the hotel intimate and personal.
- Flexible layouts – rooms accommodate solo travellers, couples, groups of three, and families of four.
- Warm interiors – darker colours, light wood & warm creams create character.
- Family friendly – the more spacious suite is likely the best choice for groups of four.
- Well equipped – every room includes a TV, coffee & tea facilities, and climate control.

There are just 9 rooms, Hotel Malleberg is an intimate boutique hotel, which is integral to most of its charm.
Out of the 9, there are four types, which means only a few of each type, organised by number of guests.
Hotel Malleberg’s smallest option includes either one or two beds, a neat and tidy Double arranged to please.
For three guests, you’ll find three twins or a double/single configuration.
For four people, there’s a room and a suite option. Families would likely do well to opt for the more spacious Suite.
All are nicely and tastefully designed, more guest room than hotel room. There’s none of the white-on-white or range of grays and beige.
Instead, they opt for darker colours offset by light wood and warm creams.
A few have interesting architectural elements, but otherwise they’re relatively straightforward.
All rooms include TVs, coffee and tea capabilities, and climate control.
What are prices like?
And what’s the food like? Any facilities we should know about?
- Vegan breakfast – the plant-based morning feast is one of Hotel Malleberg’s biggest attractions and draws non-guests too.
- Cosy space – the intimate hotel swaps conventional large-scale amenities for a relaxed, homely atmosphere.
- Cellar events – film nights and pop-up bars make the atmospheric historic cellar a sociable highlight.
Breakfast is served from the creativity of the plant-based kitchen.
It’s a famous vegan feast and a draw for more than just hotel guests.
If you’re keen on the bacon and eggs though, get yourself a non B&B room.
You’re in the city centre, and surrounded by wonderful cafes and restaurants.
With just 9 rooms, Hotel Malleberg eschews larger hotel facilities for a cosy, homely atmosphere.
It organises a variety of events in the cellar, from film nights to pop-up bars, which are nice occasions to get to know your fellow guests.
Our favourite part of the building, the cellar is an extra intimate, romantic space, within ancient stone and palpable history.
It’s also available for rentals, should you need the place to yourself.
How is the neighbourhood? Anything interesting nearby?
- Truly central – the Belfry, De Burg, canals, museums, and beer gardens are all just minutes away.
- Easy wandering – Bruges is made for exploring on foot, with medieval sights appearing around almost every corner.
- Green spaces – Koningin Astridpark is less than 10 minutes away when you need a break from the historic centre.
- Quieter corners – Sint-Gillis and West-Brugge offer a more relaxed, less tourist-focused side of the city.
- Rail access – Bruges station is around 20 minutes away on foot, with connections to Brussels and the wider region.
When we say central Bruges here, we really mean central.
It’s the perfect place for wandering; always difficult to get too lost with the landmark stone tower of the Belfry of Bruges just minutes from the hotel.
De Burg, Bruges’ main square, is on the way, and the hotel’s street runs parallel to what is perhaps the city’s loveliest canal, Groenerei; the Green Canal.
The outdoor recreation of Koningin Astridpark is walkable in less than 10 minutes.
Indeed, there’s little of Bruges that’s more than 10 minutes from Hotel Malleberg.
Quieter Sint-Gillis is around 15, when you need a break from the tourism bubble, as is the more down-to-earth West-Brugge.
The rail station is around 20 minutes, which can connect you with Brussels and the rest of Europe.
Other than that, you’re spending almost zero time in transit. Even the time you do spend walking will be full of all the medieval gems you find along the streets of the city.
